  • Microsoft Dynamics SL – System Message 7011

    by Stefan Nachev | Mar 20, 2012

The MS Dynamics support site lists many possible causes of this problem but apparently not all.

The issue could be caused by a printer driver, as described here:

    http://dynamictechservices.com/wordpress/archives/181

In my case the indication was that in the Printers section in the Control Panel, the printer in question was shown as 'Access Denied'

    by Stefan Nachev | Mar 20, 2012
  • Example: To View a Report By URL

    by Feng Li | Mar 13, 2012

SQL Server report server provides a shortcut to view report directly by browser with an URL. This way a report could be viewed by varied applications and end user does not have to login to report manager to get report run.

To generate the URL of a report, follows this pattern:

    http://<report server url>?/<report folder>/<report name>&Parameter1=Value1&Parameter2=Value2&rs:command=render&rc:Parameters=false…

(See a detailed reference for "rs" and "rc" command http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms155391.aspx)

    Sample:

    http:///reportserver?/open sales orders/Order Detail&OrderNumber=S720303&CalendarType=1&rs:Command=Render&rc:Parameters=false&rs:Format=HTML4.0&rc:toolbar=true

A trick for an OLAP report or the value of report parameters include a "&" character:

because the "&" character is reserved  in URL, so if any parameter or value contain "&" character, the browser will not explain it as a part of value, the report will not run or return wrong data. So we need to use javascript eacape function (when open a new window from the "Navidation" property of a report element):

    ="javascript:void(window.open('http://report server url?/report folder/report name&ReportParameterName=" & replace(ParameterValue,"&","' + escape('&') + '") & "&rs:Command=Render&rc:Parameters=false&rs:Format=HTML4.0&rc:toolbar=true","WindowName","Window property like height,width,scrollbar,location bae"),'_blank')"

I ran into a problem where changes to the data set I was making in one of my reports in BIDS were not being reflected in the data the report was returning. Found an interesting article about caching that BIDS does -

ERP in SME 2011: Setting the Stage for Growth

While Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) was once looked upon as a business solution that was only for large enterprises, Aberdeen’s recent research has found that this in no longer the case. In a survey conducted between May and August 2011 with over 300 respondents in small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), or organizations with less than $500 million in annual revenue, it was found that 77% of SMEs have already implemented an ERP solution. Indeed, for those SMEs that have not yet implemented ERP, the top reason that would justify the investment is explosive growth (46%). Additional reasons include regulatory compliance requirements (39%) and the availability of low cost options (39%). As the economy starts to recover, businesses are anticipating a period of growth. The potential to become a larger organization looms and SMEs have realized lower-cost ERP solutions are becoming an option that will help them realize their full potential. For the fourth year in a row, Aberdeen turns its eyes towards the tangible performance enhancements that SMEs are achieving through ERP deployment, as well as the capabilities that are having a major effect on the way that these organizations perform in relation to their larger peers.

Aberdeen defines Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) as an integrated suite of modules that forms the operational and transactional system of record upon which any business is based. As a transaction-oriented system, it seems only natural that ERP would have a major impact on the day-to-day activities of finance executives. Still, not all finance executives are getting the full use out of ERP. As those responsible for the financial stability of the organization, informed finance executives are utilizing ERP to stabilize back-office functions, gain full visibility into financial metrics, identify opportunities to cut costs, devise more accurate plans, and make more agile, informed decisions. This Analyst Insight examines the challenges facing finance executives today, and the ways in which ERP is helping them to overcome these challenges.

  • Error Importing a solution in CRM 2011

    by Chris Stevens | Jul 21, 2011
I recently was getting an error while trying to install a CRM 2011 solution at a Customer site. I was getting and error message stating “invalid fields” on a specific custom entity. After looking at the download log in Excel, I found the issue. I had created a field with the wrong data type and had successfully already imported the solution on my clients system. On my development copy, I deleted the field and recreated it with the correct data type but with the exact same name – that was the field that was preventing the solution import from working. The solution import process  would not change the data type but instead raised the error message. Once I deleted the field on my client’s machine, the solution imported successfully.

  • CRM 2011–Connection Role Category

    by Chris Stevens | Jul 21, 2011

The new Connections feature that was added in CRM 2011 has proved quite useful and has replaced a custom Relationship Entity in a solution that I had built. I needed to create some new business Connection Role Categories  for a solution I was building for a client and had to do some searching around to find where to maintain them. Turns out that it is simple, they are contained in a global option set “Category”. Its very easy when you know where to look, just go to Settings>Customizations>Components>Option Sets and update the “Category” option set, it’s the only system option set  by default.

DANBURY, CT – July 14, 2011 – MaxQ Technologies Inc. (MaxQ), a provider of Business Intelligence Solutions, announced today that it has achieved a Gold Business Intelligence Competency in the Microsoft Partner Network, demonstrating its ability to meet Microsoft customers’ evolving needs in today’s dynamic business environment.

To earn a Microsoft Gold Competency, organizations must complete a rigorous set of tests to prove their level of technology expertise, have a specific number of Microsoft Certified Professionals on staff, submit customer references and demonstrate their commitment to customer satisfaction by participating in an annual survey.

This accomplishment marks the fifth in a series of Microsoft competencies MaxQ Technologies attained in 2011.  Earlier this year, MaxQ Technologies also earned a Gold Competency for Independent Software Vendor, and Silver Competencies for ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning), CRM (Customer Relationship Management) and Web Development.

Celebrating their 25th year of providing clients and Microsoft Partners with Business Intelligence, Supply Chain, and Financial Solutions, MaxQ continues to provide customers with cost effective solutions designed to enhance visibility and streamline business processes.

“A Gold Business Intelligence Competency differentiates us from the competition and establishes us as market leaders, further demonstrating our commitment to serving the needs of customers relying on Microsoft-based solutions,” said John Pavain, President of MaxQ Technologies.  “MaxQ is now a member of a select group of partners that have achieved Gold Competency Standards for BI – and a member of an even smaller community that has been able to achieve five competencies since Microsoft’s launch of the program in 2010.  This achievement is a testament to MaxQ’s expertise, and to our commitment to provide technology expertise in response to today’s business needs.”

“The Microsoft Partner Network is designed to empower solution providers to succeed in today’s business environment. By achieving the prestigious Gold competency, participating companies are provided with a rich set of benefits, including increased customer visibility through branding and accessibility, training and support,” said Jon Roskill, Corporate Vice President, Worldwide Partner Group at Microsoft Corp. “We are proud to put forth a program that provides the right resources to  help a company develop the expertise customers demand in today’s competitive market and also provides the community and infrastructure that can connect them to one another, lowering costs for all parties.”

The Microsoft Gold Competency signifies to the market that a company has demonstrated the highest level of skill and achievement within a given technology specialization. All 28 Microsoft competencies are designed to help differentiate a partner’s specific technology capabilities, helping customers find solution providers quickly and easily. • Business Intelligence or Reporting?

    by Chris Stevens | Jun 23, 2011

We get requests every day from companies that tell us they can't get the information they need from their reporting tool or reporting application.  Many blame the reporting tool for not being able to produce the data required, when what's really needed, is a change in paradigm.  You can't squeeze Business Intelligence from a reporting application, it's as simple as that.

Most reporting tools used today produce snapshots of data organized by month, year, etc.  They are usually not capable of manipulating data to provide trending, and real time analysis.  Report applications provide the data for the reader to conduct the analysis - which we know is time consuming, doesn't always produce one version of the truth, and can miss key assumptions - resulting in invalid or inaccurate results.

Business is complex - if we could get the data we needed from reporting applications, we wouldn't need BI solutions.  But to be fair, reporting applications are just as important as BI solutions.  Users need access to data to do their jobs effectively, but to expect a reporting tool to provide detailed analysis and trending is expecting a result these solutions were never meant to provide.

BI solutions provide the framework, engine and agreed-upon-formulas for the required analysis and trends needed to effectively manage a business.  These formulas access data from many different data sources, extracting and pressing historical and current data into formulas and presenting it to users in a manner that is meaningful, such as graphics, charts, etc.

It's easy to confuse reporting with BI - we think of a report as a magic spreadsheet that should provide us with the answers we need.  Many times, simple spreadsheets will do this, however many businesses we've worked with have made key business decisions based on "data" that either wasn't produced accurately, or more often than not, produced assumptions that weren't based on real time analysis and trending.

BI doesn't have to be a significant investment in time, money and resources - companies should think of BI solutions as a way to improve productivity, enabling employees to focus on managing the business instead of assuming or analyzing data that doesn't provide a true reflection of the state of the business.

  • Santa's North Pole Experiences Success Implementing Japanese 5-S Strategy

    by Chris Stevens | Dec 28, 2010

With all the buzz about lean strategies we thought we’d take a moment to share with you some insight into the latest buzz on supply chain strategies.  While this strategy isn’t necessarily new, it received a lot of press in supply chain circles in 2010.

While the concept was designed for manufacturers, we think it applies to every company.   MaxQ will soon be moving to our new offices and as we look at all the stuff we've accumulated over the last 10 years, we may give the 5S strategy a shot. We were struck by how easy the concept is, yet how difficult it is to start and maintain.  So take a look around your own workspace and see what improvements you might be able to make in 2010.  The following is a primer we wrote to explain the Japanese Lean Strategy called The 5 S's set in a very familiar setting.  If you never saw the 1964 animated classic TV special "Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer", we feel very sorry for you.

Enjoy and Happy Holidays from all of us here at MaxQ Technologies.

North Pole Experiences Success Implementing Japanese 5-S Philosophy

Even the North Pole is not immune to taking a hard look at Lean strategies for their business.  In an effort to streamline 2010 operations, reduce costs and improve elf relations The North Pole began a major initiative after the 2009 Christmas season as part of their 5-year Lean Implementation plan.

After much contemplation and surfing the net for the latest in business trends, Santa Klaus, CEO and President of the North Pole, rounded up his management team last January for an exploratory meeting to see if The 5 S’s strategy might be a complementary approach to their Lean initiatives.

The 5-S Strategy is based on 5 Japanese words that begin with the letter S, and focuses on workplace organization and the standardization of work procedures to maximize efficiencies.  By reducing waste and non-value-added activity, manufacturers and distributors simplify their work environments which maximize quality, efficiency and safety.

Implementing Lean Manufacturing initiatives over the past 5 years has not been easy for The North Pole.

“Years ago kids were satisfied with Tinker Toys, Hot Wheels, or Twister,” said Heinrich Frieze, CFO, North Pole.  “We used to rely on receiving hand written lists from our customers which helped us manage inventory, but that model is a thing of the past.  Today we’re moving so fast monitoring Facebook and Twitter, and adapting to changes in demand, that we leave a wake of clutter and mess behind that actually decreases our ability to improve efficiencies.”

“Implementing The 5-S Philosophy is an easy concept, but staying with it is another matter,”  said Yukon Cornelius. “We’ve been diligent about maintaining our new changes and experienced a fantastically smooth 2010 season thanks to the changes we implemented.”

    SEIRI (Sort)
The first S of the strategy focuses on eliminating unnecessary items from the workplace.  In the first quarter of 2010, North Pole elves placed a red tag on all items in their workplace that was not required to complete their job.  The Sort process is for evaluating “red tag” items.  Items that were used occasionally were moved to other areas, while unneeded items were discarded.  Sorting provided a way to free up valuable floor space and eliminated things like broken tools, old cardboard game spinners, scrap and excess raw material.  An added benefit for the North Pole was that this phase assisted in combating the “just-in-case” hording tendencies prevalent among elves.

SEITON (Set In Order) is the second S and focuses on efficient and effective storage methods.  Each elf was required to ask themselves:

1.) What do I need to do my job?
2.) Where should I locate this item?
3.) How many of this item do I need?

In the second quarter of 2010, the shop floor at The North Pole decided to paint their floors to outline work areas and specific locations.  They installed modular shelving and cabinets to better organize items like trash cans, tape, gift wrap, Allen wrenches, etc.

“These items should be readily available to all elves and in a place where all elves can find them,” said Clarice Thedoe, who became certified to implement The 5-S Strategy for The North Pole.  “Once we eliminated the debris that cluttered up our workspace, and found proper homes for items that we use, the next step was to thoroughly clean the area.”

    SEISO (Shine)

“Seiso means Shine.  With daily shining we consistently keep areas neat and efficient," Clarice continued.  "The idea is that clean and clutter-free work areas help to create a feeling of ownership in both the equipment and our facilities.  Elves are now able to notice much more quickly when our ribbon bow machine is misaligned, or if the gift boxes are produced off-spec.  Items like these, when left unattended, could lead to equipment failure and loss of production.  Our Xbox demand is just too high for us to risk anything that could impact our production lines.”

    SEIKETSU (Standardize)

Late in Q2 of 2010  the fourth stage of the strategy began to standardize best practices in each work area.   “We felt it was critical that Elves participate in the development of best practices as they are an often overlooked source of information regarding how daily work can be better streamlined,” said Cornelius.

    SHITSUKE (Sustain)
“I’d say the most difficult stage to implement and maintain was the last stage of Sustaining.  Elf nature, like human nature, is to resist change.  Many organizations take months to complete their first 4 S’s only to find themselves in a dirty, cluttered shop a few months later.  The tendency to return to the status quo of the “old way” is a constant obstacle to a successful implementation, but with a little hard work and determination we saw the benefits of implementing this strategy this Christmas season.”

Morale is up evidenced by a recent survey of Elves who for the last six months have been working in clean and organized work areas.  Best practices are fully defined and the elves are enjoying the results of executing work flows the most efficient way.  The good cheer has bled over to the transportation department who no longer has to wait around in freezing temperatures caused by the elves missing fulfillment and shipping deadlines.

“Overall, we’re quite happy with our 2010 season results,” beamed Klaus.  “Continuous improvement has lead to less waste, better quality and faster lead times.  We were able to execute 30% more on-time shipments this year over last year and are much more organized in how we process orders through Amazon, Wal-Mart.com and Best Buy.  The online world creates a constant challenge for us, but through our Lean initiatives we are poised to rise to the challenge and look forward to a spectacular 2011 Holiday Season.”

We hope you have a wonderful Holiday season and best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

  • Increasing Mobile WorkForce Pushes ERPs to Go Mobile

    by Chris Stevens | Dec 10, 2010

SYSPRO recently announced that recognizing the requirements of an increasingly mobile workforce SYSPRO is now making SYSPRO ERP software available via the iPhone. SYSPRO ERP users can now run SYSPRO wirelessly and securely anywhere in the world via the iPhone through the utilization of the SYSPRO On the Go iPhone application, which is available for download from the iTunes store.

According to SYSPRO CEO Phil Duff, "We recognize that mobility is the future, and there is no doubt that the mobile device will be the world's primary computing tool by 2020. To put this in perspective, right now over 90% of US adults own a cell phone, and the computer in your cell phone today is 1 million times cheaper, 1,000 times more powerful and about 100,000 times smaller than the one computer at MIT in 1965. But equally important to SYSPRO is the increasing number of SYSPRO users who have requested remote access to information contained in the SYSPRO ERP database. The capability in the new SYSPRO On the Go iPhone application is indicative of the ways in which SYSPRO continues to listen to and accommodate the needs of its customers as well as market forces."

SYSPRO has launched a new video to illustrate how ERP for mobile business can impact company productivity.

    About SYSPRO

Since its inception in 1978, SYSPRO has been delivering state-of-the-art business solutions to some of the world's leading companies. • Solutions for Evolving Supply Chain Concerns May Be Right Under Your Nose

    by Chris Stevens | Dec 10, 2010

In November, McKinsey & Co. released the findings from it's Global Survey which indicates the supply chain issues manufacturers and distributors were worried about just before the downturn of our economy have shifted.  Five years ago companies named their number one concern as managing the volatility of customer demand, which doesn't even make the Top 5 in this new survey.  Companies sited managing increased pressure from global competition, managing the increased expectations about customer service/product quality, and coping with operations associated with the complex patterns of customer demand as their top concerns.

Read The McKinsey & Co. Study

Recent updates and additions to today's leading business systems help companies better manage these issues, yet we have found that few customers take advantage (or know of) the functionality that may be available in their business systems.  Statistics note that most companies use only 60% of the functionality that is available in their existing ERP system.  One of the best things companies can do to ensure their investment in technology and systems is to conduct a thorough review of your business system every 3 years.  This review will keep you up to date on recent enhancements and modules that are available that you might own (but are not using) or that could yield a high return on investment by adding functionality to solve your business issue.  We've uncovered instances where a simple change in processing produced a quick fix for companies.  A business review gives you the opportunity to discuss changing requirements with your vendor, and make the most of the investments you've made in your business systems.  A business review can often produce quick results, be more effective and economical than sending a person to a user conference once a year.
